How can I make custom weapons for existing characters?

An idea popped into my head and I want to change Enric's character files so that he can hold a pickaxe like one of those worker dwarfs, but I need to learn how to do it. I tried looking for a guide but with no success. Can someone show me how to properly edit a character's weapon? I also want to add this weapon as a variation of Enric's selection. He has a sword, an axe, and a mace, but I want to add a pickaxe as well, as a fourth option.]

Any help would be much appreciated.
