Errors when trying to play dbts xtended

by dbtslimbfromlimb » 21 Apr 2011 03:43

Hello all!

I'm a huge fan of dbts, and have been playing the game since it first came out. As a matter of fact, this game is the reason that I purchased a PC.

Anyways... I recently downloaded the hazard xtended edition(Thanks so much!) version 1.5.0. In attempting to get the game going, I encountered several odd things. Firstly, in the xtended launcher, I noted that the "run xtended version" was greyed out. I immediately went online, and found that you needed .net framework 4.0, directx updated, and x86 c++ 2010 redistributable installed. After updating everything, the "run xtended version" in the xlauncher was still greyed out! So I started troubleshooting, and replaced the windie.exe 1.04 with the original windie.exe...and...the run xtended version became accessible and the "mods" portion of the xlauncher became accessible as well(ie became yellow when before were grey).

So then I proceeded to launch the game in xtended mode, with everything maxed out in the options(max widescreen res, max antialiasing, etc.), with no mods enabled, though the cusspack and other hazard mods were available to be checked.

The game did not ask me to choose the graphics renderer(d9 new, d5 old, glidewrapper). The intro music did not play, but upon the home screen the sound of the sword ensued(without having to continually move the mouse...Thanks Hazard!). (Without the cd in) I first attempted to load the arena with the following results:

A black screen ensued, hung for about 5 seconds, then went back out to windows with the following error message:
GAME CRASH! Last reported error
Couldn't find race orc

I brought the game up again, and this time attempted to enter the tutorial, with the following results:

A black screen ensued, but did not automatically exit to windows. I started task manager, and ended xwindie.exe. Upon exiting to windows, a message with the same format as the one previously mentioned popped up saying:
GAME CRASH! Last reported error
Expected integer in scenes\trainer.scn

I feel like I'm so close to being able to play the xtended edition, but still can't! I love this game, and sincerely appreciate any help that anyone can give. Hopefully Hazard himself will read this post and help out.

System stats:
ATI Radeon 4800
Intel processor
Windows 7 64 bit Home

If you need detailed system stats I'll put them up, but the graphics card and operating system are probably the only relevant stats.

I wish all the best and I hope you're enjoying this phenomenal game in a "new light" thanks to Hazard!

Hi again! I'm sorry I believe that I should post the exact error reports. There are 3 reports for me to post: one each for attempting to load the tutorial, the quests, and the tournament and arena. (And by the way I am running xlauncher in compatibility mode for windows xp service pack 2, which the compatibility troubleshooter recommended. Tryed in all other compatibility modes, to no avail.) Here are the error reports:

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this post! Again, any help is much appreciated! I'm really interested in finding out exactly what's going on, from a technical standpoint. (Not to mention the desire to play "DBTS 2".)

Do you have a different language version of DBTS than english? This would explain why Xtended was grayed out at first.
You should also try to copy all ATD files from the DATA folder on the CD into the DATA folder of your installation. I always ran Xtended solely from Disk, thus it might not work correctly when run with a partial installation and the CD. Copy the LFL data first and the original DBTS data afterwards, each time without overwriting existing files. This way all files should be present and it will hopefully work correctly then.

Hi Hazard! Thanks for posting so quick! How are things in Germany?

Well, to answer your question, I have the english version, and both dbts and lfl are installed. I am going to manually copy the atd files and then post the results later today.

Thank you Hazard!

Re: Errors when trying to play dbts xtended

I am in the process of copying the data files as I write this post. One thing that I'm thinking is that you mentioned a partial installation with cd. I actually did the entire installation, so I'm certain that the files are there. And in the tutorial error, it finds the scenes/trainer.scn, but says it expected an integer in that file.

Update: Just copied all data files and still no dbts. Taking a look at the data files made me aware that all of them are .atd files. In my error messages, there is no problem with the atd files(except for the reference to "race orc").

I couldn't find the music_tagtroub.wav file anywhere in my installation. Should I be getting other files from another source? Newer files? I have not patched the game, as it seems the only difference is the .exe being updated. Not to mention the fact that it will only let me run the xtended edition if I use the original windie.exe. (Interestingly enough, if I rename xwindie.exe to windie.exe, it says that it cannot identify the version of dbts I'm running.)

Thanks for the help Hazard! Please assist me further if you have the time, it would be very much appreciated!

Take care everyone!

Hi all! Sorry to post so many times, but something just came up. I searched both the dbts and lfl discs, and music_tagtroub.wav is nowhere to be found! I bought these discs back in 2002. They are the original discs, but may not be an updated version. I get the feeling that there has been an update to the game that I have missed. I'm not using a downloaded copy or iso, so I'm probably missing an update.

All data files being ATD is correct. ATD files are packages containing the actual files. The music_tagtroub.wav file is contained in the music.atd, for example.
This reminds me of something else: Which setting is selected for the Filesystem option? Make sure it is set to "Only package content" for highest reliability.
If it still doesn't work you could try to copy the ATDs from the LFL CD (yes, not the DBTS CD) again, this time overwriting all existing ones (to make sure each one is original).
Do you still get the same error messages (especially the orc one)?

Hazard! Things have gotten alot better since I copied the lfl disc and replaced the files! (By the way the option for only package content, the default, is selected.) Interestingly enough, the intro music plays now, and I can play the tutorial!

There is no more problem with tagtroub or race orc! Thank you Hazard! It was really awesome to see the improvements, if only in the tutorial!

But when I try any of the other selections(arena, tournament, quests), it says "xwindie.exe has stopped working", and the details of the crash are as follows:

Windows error:
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: xwindie.exe

I have directx 9.0c installed in addition to directx 11.

Why ntdll.dll? And why is the tutorial functioning perfectly and the others are not? Isn't it the same thing?

Well Hazard, you've certainly done quite well. Thank you for everything. I am going to search the web for an updated ntdll.dll file. Anything else you can think of Hazard?

Do not replace your ntdll.dll file! It is an important windows file, and replacing it might trash your windows installation!

It is hard to tell what is causing the remaining crashes.
Maybe some files of the DBTS installation are still wrong. But it may also be that some hardware or driver combination causes problems. Those things are very hard to track down. The fact that the tutorial works now. however, seems to indicate that it is still a problem with the data files.

If you want to make sure that you have a 100% clear DBTS folder, try the following:
- create a new folder on your disk somewhere, maybe parallel to your other DBTS installation, and name it "windie2" or something like that.
- insert your DBTS CD
- copy all the content of the "die" folder of your DBTS CD into the new "windie2" folder.
- insert your LFL CD
- copy all the content of the "die" folder of your LFL CD into the new "windie2" folder.
- extract Xtended into the new "windie2" folder.
- run xLauncher.exe, check whether all options are as desired and run the game

I hope this helps, finally.

Oh sweet sweet Hazard! Thou hast done it!

I was going nuts doing a windows update and then attempting to reinstall a new version of ntdll.dll. Took a break and looked at the thread. Saw your post Hazard! It saved me alot of trouble!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH HAZARD!

The game looks great! I went into the lavapit and noticed with great happiness the reflection of the lava on the walls! A steady, beautiful, red glow! I can't wait to play the quest...on Lord of course!

Is there anything I can do for you Hazard? If there is anything I can do for you please don't hesitate to ask.

I went as far as buying windows 98 se to play dbts...couldn't get the operating system installed because of far advanced computer components. Went on to try XP, but failed due to other reasons. But now, with Hazard's help, I can play the game on Windows 7 64 bit! I'm sorry if I didn't try the simple things first...I was positive due to the fact that I installed the games from disc that it would work.

Well, hopefully this thread helps others out as well.

Take care Hazard and all the best!

(BTW: If there are any tournies I'd love to join in!)

BTW:

Following Hazard's instructions to a tee, I did not run any programs in dbts in compatibility mode.

THE LAVA ANIMATION IN THE LAVAPIT IS BREATHTAKING AND SPELLBINDING!!! I REALLY MEAN IT!

I was just staring at the lava for about 10 seconds...watching it flow.

You really did a great job Hazard and I am very thankful!
